EXPERIENCE

2010 to present

Development of custom web applications and support and enhancment of existing legacy applications. Handling the full scope of the projects from project requirement gathering, setting up the web and database server, developing the code, database and UI, and ongoing support, enhancements and server management. Projects developed leveraging the AWS platform or utilizing the client's existing setup.

Example project includes collaboration on a system developed for and deployed by the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for studies on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). This software is used for scheduling patient and study participant visits. The information gathered from these visits is used across various research projects within the DoD and VA. The web based system integrates with a data gathering software package running on laptops and tablets.

2007 to present

Work closely with the client to gather requirements of project. Create project estimation and specification documentation. Work with graphic designers to develop the user interface for various devices. Client, team, and code management throughout the duration of the project. Setup of development server and software environment. Development of the software and database. Moving system to live production environment and continued support and enhancement of the software application.

Development of the company's software product ActiveOffice. This is a web based collaboration suite of tools to manage files, projects, sales cycle, calendar, support tickets, messaging, and discussions which includes ActiveCMS - a content management system.

Example project includes assisting Morley and Retail Consulting Group (RCG) to create a web based system to manage the vehicle buyback program for Nissan. Drastically reduced the amount of time Morley spent on scheduling buyback meetings. The system transmits data received from Nissan via XML in order to allow scheduling of meetings. Utilized in all 50 states and resulted in a 10 fold employee increase for RCG with the addition of over 100 new field representatives who actively use the system. Worked for RCG to create additional secure systems used by Audi, Bentley, and Volkswagen.

Lead Software Engineer, MedRed, Chicago, IL

July, 2005 to October, 2007

Development of a web based Personal Medical Record (PMR) that synchronizes with a .NET application running on a U3 USB thumb drive. Allows patients and their doctors to manage the data on both the U3 application and website synchronizes between the two. The system allows for emergency personnel to access medical data, while the patient controls who accesses the information, and how much information can be accessed.

Creation of an intranet application for doctors working on development of an expert diagnostic system for the Department of Defense. Oversaw development of a medical expert diagnostic system running on a PDA written in C#, which also utilizes an Emergency Medical Record (EMR). PDA application interfaces with a web service and website for distributing patient and diagnostic information to remote emergency first responders. Implemented a GPS mapping feature to track personnel in the field and graphically display their location to central command via a website. System is based on the Battlefield Medical Information System-Tactical (BMIS-T).

SNOMED CT and HL7 experience. Oversaw and tested additional software development by overseas team to ensure specs and timelines were met.

Director of IT, The Center for International Rehabilitation, Chicago, IL

July, 2005 to October, 2007

Development of a website and desktop application software for the iCons in Medicine program. This is a tele-consultation program that allows doctors in remote and underserved areas to connect with specialists around the world. Consists of a small desktop application that utilizes store-and-forward methodology to account for areas where internet connection is slow and unreliable. Allows specialists to consult on cases via a web interface and to exchange images, notes, and documents with the requesting doctor. Technologies utilized include ColdFusion, Microsoft SQL server, HTML Application (HTA), XML, web services, and DICOM.

Development of the company website and the IDEAnet community of practice website. The IDEAnet site consists of a rehabilitation community and the disability rights community. Developed a series of collaboration tools to allow members to form project groups to collaborate online. These include discussion forums, document repository, listserv, and private messaging. The document repository had the ability to create SCORM compliant packages of any object or group of objects.

Creation of a system based on PDFs and store-and-forward methodology to collect report data from researchers in many European countries. It allowed the researchers to complete the 400+ question report and send the information to a central server for reporting purposes. This same technology was also utilized in gathering research data in Nicaragua, in both English and Spanish languages to significantly reduce the amount of time needed to enter and report on the collected data.

Additional responsibilities included system and user documentation of the systems, authorizing hardware and software purchasing, and managing additional IT and design employees.

Software Engineer, Control Room Technologies, Lansing, MI

January, 1999 to July, 2005

Lead engineer of a development team, creating database driven intranet and Internet applications which included creating and enforcing coding standards for the company. Oversaw testing of new projects, worked on the creation of business designs and user manuals, and estimated time and tasks for all development projects.

Creation of a monitoring and configuration software system for managing die presses in metal fabrication plants at General Motors. Conducted three day training session for General Motors plant managers on developed software as well as the development of the user manual and training material. Software integrated existing Modbus monitoring hardware with Oracle DB using ColdFusion, VB.NET Window services, and Java Applets.

Work on a system that integrates with eBay and Amazon. System posts, monitors, and finalizes auctions. Integrates with an inventory management portion and performs online checkout.

Creation of a vehicle tracking system for Cassen's Trucking. System allows for the visual tracking of vehicles and dealers based on GPS data that is imported into the system.

Creation of an audio upload tool for the Sporting News Radio that allows producers to record audio in the studio then automatically upload it to a server.

Department of Defense / MedRed and Patent

Co-authored a patent for an Integrated Method and System for Diagnosis Determination which the MedRed software is based on.

Patent Details

Big Ten Network

Created a customer contact and support ticket system used by the Big Ten Network website. Allows multiple BTN employees to quickly respond to customer submissions and track correspondence using one system.

Allows the majority of customer questions to be addressed before submitting them to BTN which reduces the customer support load. Allows robust reporting of submissions based on things such as programming provider, in and out of conference footprint, zip code, and contact type.

American Academy of Pediatrics TEAMS

Created the website and data gathering system for the American Academy of Pediatrics TEAMS program. It allows member school districts to share documents, discussion forums, and enter disctrict specific information.

South Haven Visitor Bureau

Created a responsive website for the South Haven Visitor Bureau as a resource for visitors of the region. The system allows SHVB employees to manage events, accommodations, and attractions.

Hillsdale Hospital

Created a website for Hillsdale Hospital. It allows them to easily manage all aspects of the site: page content, slideshow images, upcoming events, job postings, available services, and physician directory.
This works in conjunction with their employee intranet, The Loop, which I also wrote for them so they can distribute information to employees, manage public website content, track trouble tickets, and more.

GM Green Dealer

Created a system to allow GM dealers to parcicipate in the GM Green Dealer program. It allows dealers to self-assess themselves. The self-assessment tool is available to all dealers at any time. It serves many purposes:

  • Determine eligibility for the GM Green Dealer Recognition
  • Identify opportunities that exist at automobile dealerships
  • Providing access to a inventory of green business practices
